August 14-16, 2005 at the Great South Channel

The early morning of our 5th trip to the Great South Channel in four years started in fog and remained foggy with limited visibility throughout much of the morning.  This did not hamper our ability to find humpback whales.  Based upon our sightings in previous years, we decided upon a search area and were with our first group of whales by 7:15 AM.  Our day began with a trio, Echo and her 4th calf being escorted by Tectonic.  Our whale sightings for the day ended hours later as a minke whale breached 27 times.  Our second day was as rewarding as the first.  Look below for the ID's and some images of the 30 humpbacks we encountered, including 6 cow/calf pairs.

Sighting Summaries

The detailed list of humpback sightings was compiled by Cara Pekarcik of  The Whale Center of New England who joined us to help identify individuals.
